Ruoholahti playground receives international design award

The Ruoholahti computer-themed playground has been awarded an honourable mention in the Fast Company's Innovation by Design competition in the Urban Design category.

A computer-themed playground in Ruoholahti, Helsinki, has been awarded an honourable mention in the Urban Design category of the Fast Company’s Innovation by Design competition. The award recognises the way in which the playground has combined public space, technology, play and learning – without screens.

The Ruoholahti computer-themed playground was completed in autumn 2024. The playground was designed by author and illustrator Linda Liukkas in collaboration with the city, Liukkas and Näkymä Oy, a landscape architecture firm. The users of the playground, adults and children, have also been extensively involved in the design of the park and its activities.

Ruoholahti playground is actively used as a place for schools to visit and for teacher training.

The recognition reinforces Helsinki’s position as a pioneer of public urban spaces that promote learning. Fast Company is an international innovation, technology and design media. Its annual Innovation by Design award recognises globally impressive design solutions.
